Ambassador hosts 2018 Goût de France dinner

Ambassador Jean-Pierre Jouyet hosts annual Goût de France dinner at French Residence

On 21 March 2018, dinners served simultaneously around the world showcased French cuisine, its capacity for innovation and its values: sharing, enjoyment and respect for high-quality, environmentally-responsible food.

In London, Ambassador Jean-Pierre Jouyet hosted a dinner prepared by Michelin-starred chef Raymond Blanc OBE, French Residence chef Gilles Quillot and the UK’s World Pastry Cup team for 2019.

Guests included Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, author Kazuo Ishiguro, the New Statesman’s Jason Cowley, Sky News presenter Kay Burley, FT deputy editor Roula Khalaf, sailor Alex Thomson and many others guests from the economic, diplomatic, political, media and cultural worlds.

The Ambassador said: "French cuisine is a showcase of positive French values, imbued with the warmth associated with the pleasures of the table."

Goût de France is an annual global event supported by Alain Ducasse and the French Foreign Ministry, with 3,000 restaurants participating worldwide this year. Forty restaurants across the UK took part.

This year, Embassy chef Gilles Quillot was challenged to prepare a menu for under £10 (excluding wine), to demonstrate that a high-quality meal can be created at low cost, making fine dining more accessible.

In addition to 21 March, the French Embassy has carried out many other gastronomic activities.

Under its partnership with The Clink Charity and its restaurants, Aubaine’s head chef Anthony Ekizian and its pastry chef were sent to give a masterclass for inmates at Brixton prison.

The Embassy has also continued its partnership with the charity Chefs Adopt a School. This involves French and British chefs visiting bilingual schools together to raise awareness among schoolchildren about healthy eating.

British schoolchildren have also been invited to lunch at the Lycée Charles de Gaulle, the Collège Français Bilingue de Londres and the Lycée Winston Churchill to promote the concept of “eating well”.

The restaurants and chefs participating in this year’s Goût de France are diverse, with many British chefs taking part, and a wide range of restaurants from newly-opened bistros to some of the most renowned restaurants in the world.
