Ministers Emmanuel Macron and Axelle Lemaire were in London on Thursday to launch French Tech Hub London, the initiative led by entrepreneurs and backed by the government supporting France’s new generation of startups.
The event was introduced by Ambassador Bermann while British Minister of State for Culture and the Digital Economy, Ed Vaizey, was also among the guest speakers.
Speaking at the launch event at the home of Balderton Capital in London’s King’s Cross, Emmanuel Macron told representatives of France’s startup community in London: “You’re part of this economic and cultural revolution.”
French Minister of State for the Digital Sector Axelle Lemaire also addressed the audience and praised the substantial investments in French start-ups in 2015 – seven companies raised over €25 million each, including BlaBlaCar (€178 million), SigFox (€100 million), Prêt d’union (€31 million) and Devialet (€25 million).
The French Tech Hub programme consists of a worldwide network of tech entrepreneurs, investors and executives. These 11 (soon to be 20) French Tech communities are designed to build bridges between major innovation hubs and facilitate the international growth of French start-ups.
London is the first European capital to be labelled as a French Tech Hub, coordinated by Albin Serviant, CEO of Easyroommate.com and Appartager.com, and under the patronage of Bernard Liautaud, General Partner at Balderton Capital and founder of Business Objects. Both were present at the launch event in King’s Cross.
The evening also featured flagship start-up founders and CEOs, with a panel discussion and Q&A on international growth. They were: Fanny Moizant - Co-founder, Vestiaire Collective; Philippe Gelis - CEO and co-founder, Kantox; Xavier Louis - CPO and co-founder, Peak; Ning Li - CEO and co-founder, Made.com; Mike Tuchen - CEO, Talend; Jules Minvielle - CEO and founder, Mozoo.
To date, London’s French Tech community includes the following members under the French Tech London label: French Digital, FrogValley, FrenchConnect London, Business France, the French Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain and the French Embassy.
