France and Luxembourg call for clear Brexit timetable
Luxembourg – Brexit/European Union – Meeting between M. François Hollande, President of the Republic, and Mr Xavier Bettel, Prime Minister of Luxembourg – Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic
Paris, 23 August 2016
The French President had a meeting with the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Mr Xavier Bettel, ahead of forthcoming European engagements.
They spoke of the consequences of the British referendum of 23 June and both emphasized the need to have a timetable which is clear and as swift as possible for notification of Britain’s decision to leave the European Union. They recalled that only this notification will make it possible to embark on the negotiations.
In the run-up to the summit to be held in Bratislava on 16 September, the French President and Mr Xavier Bettel signalled their agreement about revitalizing the European Union on the basis of the following priorities:
domestic and external security, which requires, among other things, enhanced protection of the EU’s external borders and European defence with the necessary capabilities and means of intervention;
the economy and social affairs, on the basis of a broadening of the Juncker Plan aimed at developing public and private investment in sectors of the future (digital technology, the energy transition, industry and research etc.);
young people, with the development of programmes that will enable them to gain access to jobs, training and mobility and to discover European cultures./.
