France consults its allies over Syria attacks

French President Emmanuel Macron spoke to Mrs Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, on the morning of Thursday 12 April.

They discussed the international situation, their shared concern following the unacceptable attacks in Syria on Saturday 7 April, and the threats posed by these new attacks on the prohibition of chemical weapons. They also expressed regret over the current deadlock at the United Nations Security Council, whose resolutions are not being complied with.

The French President and the German Chancellor agreed to remain in close contact on these issues./.

French President Emmanuel Macron spoke again on the evening of Monday 9 April to the President of the United States of America about the situation in Syria.

The French President and the US President took stock of developments since the chemical attacks of 7 April on the people of Douma in Eastern Ghouta, and the debates under way at the United Nations Security Council. They reaffirmed their desire for a firm reaction by the international community to these new attacks on the prohibition of chemical weapons.

The two presidents agreed to remain in close contact./.

Emmanuel Macron, President of the Republic, spoke to the President of the United States of America on Sunday 8 April 2018 about the situation in Syria. The French President utterly condemned the chemical attacks carried out against the people of Douma, in Eastern Ghouta, on 7 April.

The French President and the President of the United States of America exchanged their reports and analyses confirming the use of chemical weapons. They instructed their teams to deepen exchanges in the coming days.

They also decided to coordinate their actions and initiatives within the United Nations Security Council, which is due to meet in New York today, Monday 9 April, to condemn the failure to comply with Resolution 2401 and the repeated use of chemical weapons. All responsibility in the matter will have to be clearly established.

The two presidents agreed to remain in close contact and will speak to each other again in the next 48 hours./.
