France pledges continued support for Japan’s disaster recovery
Japan/disaster of 11 March 2011 – Letter from François Fillon, Prime Minister, to Yoshihiko Noda, Prime Minister of Japan
Paris, 8 March 2012
Dear Prime Minister,
A year after the terrible events which hit your country, I want to pay tribute once again to the victims of the 11 March disaster. Allow me also, on behalf of the French people, to reiterate all my feelings of sympathy and solidarity with the Japanese people and commend the dignity and courage they showed in particularly tragic circumstances.
When I travelled last autumn to Ishinomaki, in the Tōhoku region devastated by the tsunami, I was able to see first-hand the scale of the damage and the enormity of the task to be accomplished. But I was also struck by the resolute commitment of the inhabitants – and indeed of a whole people – to reconstruction.
With Japan continuing to make a dynamic and resolute recovery, I would like to confirm that you can still count on France’s full support and on the cooperation we began during my last visit to your country.
Rest assured of my determination to continue helping to strengthen the trust and friendship which define our relationship.
