France regrets Russian veto of Syria probe
Russia – Syria/telephone call between M. Emmanuel Macron, President of the Republic, and Mr Vladimir Putin, President of Russia – Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic
Paris, 13 April 2018
The President of the French Republic had a telephone conversation this morning with Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation, as part of their regular and close dialogue on Syria.
The French President stressed his deep concern about the continued worsening of the situation on the ground. He recalled France’s priorities as regards Syria: combating terrorism and preventing any resurgence of Daesh [so-called ISIL] in the region; relieving the suffering of civilian populations through full compliance with UN Security Council Resolution 2401 and enhanced humanitarian action; and beginning negotiations as soon as possible for a credible and inclusive political process.
Following the chemical attack in Douma on 7 April, the French President once more expressed his regret at the latest Russian Security Council veto obstructing a united and firm response setting up an international mechanism to establish responsibilities, prevent impunity and curb any temptation for the Syrian regime to resume such attacks.
The French President expressed his desire for the consultation between France and Russia to continue and intensify in order to restore peace and stability in Syria./.
