France to set up national guard to combat terrorism
Fight against terrorism – Creation of a national guard in France/meeting between M. François Hollande, President of the Republic, and members of parliament – Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic
Paris, 28 July 2016
The French President had a meeting this morning with the members of parliament who have worked on the possibility of creating a national guard in France.
In line with the parliamentary work done by senators Gisèle Jourda and Jean-Marie Bockel and National Assembly deputies Marianne Dubois and Joaquim Pueyo, the President decided that the national guard will be set up on the basis of existing operational reserves.
The practicalities of the protection forces’ training and distribution on French territory will be established in consultation with all the stakeholders. The President decided that a statement will be made to the Defence Council at the beginning of August and that the parliamentary committees will then carry out a consultation in September, so that the force can be created as soon as possible for the protection of French people./.
