France voices "steadfast support" for IAEA
IAEA – Meeting between M. Emmanuel Macron, President of the Republic, and Mr Rafael Grossi, Director General of the IAEA - Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic
Paris, 3 March 2020
The French President today hosted a meeting with Mr Rafael Grossi, recently elected Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), during his first visit to Paris.
The President expressed France’s steadfast support for the IAEA’s action to ensure the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear technology.
In particular, the meeting focused on the IAEA’s verification mission in Iran, based on that country’s Safeguards Agreement with the Agency, on the Additional Protocol and on the mandate provided by the Vienna agreement in 2015 (JCPOA) and United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231. The President hoped Iran would strictly observe its commitments and obligations in terms of verification, and he called on Tehran to cooperate immediately and fully with the Agency.
The President recalled the goal of the complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantling of North Korea’s nuclear programme, and the IAEA’s role in this regard.
Finally, the President and the Director General discussed ways of boosting the authority of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) – the only one enabling nuclear weapons proliferation to be prevented while providing each [signatory] with the benefits of peaceful uses of nuclear energy – in the run-up to the next Review Conference. They discussed the need for a balanced approach on the NPT’s various pillars, in particular more effectively taking into account the peaceful uses whose benefits the IAEA helps to share with all interested states, in many fields./.
