Franco-British summit held in northern France

French President François Hollande, British Prime Minister David Cameron met on 3 March in Amiens for the 34th Franco-British summit

Before the summit, the President and Prime Minister visited Pozières to pay their respects to the British soldiers who died 100 years ago in the Battle of the Somme.

The summit – also attended by the UK and French foreign, home and defence ministers as well as French Ambassador Sylvie Bermann – provided an opportunity to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

Four agreements were adopted in the following strategic areas:

-  Defence cooperation: Since the Lancaster House agreements of 2010, France and the UK have been developing their cooperation on the creation of a joint expeditionary force, on the development of a joint UAV, and in the fields of missiles and mine warfare, among other projects.

-  Counter-terrorism cooperation: The two leaders reaffirmed their shared determination to combat terrorism, particularly through joint work against radicalization and jihadist propaganda on the Internet, as well as closer police and judicial cooperation.

-  Cooperation on the migration crisis: The French President recalled the joint border control efforts to be made. Significant results have already been achieved by Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve and Home Secretary Theresa May, with UK contributions to improved migrant reception facilities in France, a doubling of the number of people-smuggling rings dismantled in Calais and Dunkirk since 2014, and tighter security for the Channel Tunnel.

-  Nuclear energy: Cooperation on nuclear energy will be deepened in the context of the Hinkley Point project. It is part of the diversification of France’s energy mix and the implementation of the 2015 Paris Agreement on the climate, in which the UK played a major role.

-  Trade and human exchanges: Finally, the summit also provided an opportunity to boost trade and human exchanges between France and the UK. Among other things, “Young Leaders” – a programme of high-level exchanges – was officially endorsed.
