The science and technology department of the French Embassy in the United Kingdom in collaboration with the British Embassy in France, with sponsorship from ESRC and EPSRC, is pleased to announce a Franco-British workshop on responsible innovation to be held in London 23-24 May 2011.

While governments increasingly invest in their research and innovation base to enhance their economic growth and ensure prosperity, public acceptance and the need to innovate responsibly are the two main obstacles regarding the use of the wealth of new technologies, be it in the energy, environment, health or communication domains, just to name a few.

As French and British governments are facing this issue, the aim of this bilateral meeting is to bring together, over two days, French and British stakeholders from various horizons (academia, industry, government) and with different experiences, in order to :
- discuss the scientific, ethical, sociological and legal aspects of responsible innovation,
- compare the actions and policies set up in both countries,
- discuss issues dealing with governance, regulation and public engagement needed to establish a successful responsible innovation policy,
- encourage the development of such a policy, both practical and visible, applicable to research funded by research councils/research and development agencies as well as other bodies, in each country.

While a series of lectures will represent the core of the workshop, our aim is to stimulate a shared dialogue, allowing the audience to fully engage with discussions and reflect on the topic, thanks to the organization of four roundtables sessions dealing with Emerging technologies, Public engagement, Governance and a practical exercise to finish off. Please refer to the attached document for details of the programme.

Two networking lunches, catered for, will be an added opportunity to interact with the variety of stakeholders present, tighten the links between France and the United Kingdom on this topical subject and build a common pragmatic approach to responsible innovation.

If you are interested in taking part in this event, please do get in touch with maggy.heintz@ambascience.co.uk, or alternatively call +44 (0)20 7073 1392.
