French President tells visiting Aung San Suu Kyi of his full support
Burma/Myanmar – Statement by M. François Hollande, President of the Republic, alongside Ms Aung San Suu Kyi, Nobel Peace Prize winner and Chairperson of the National League for Democracy and of the parliamentary Committee for Rule of Law, Peace and Tranquillity
Paris, 15 April 2014
Ladies and gentlemen,
It’s always an honour to welcome Ms Aung San Suu Kyi. She’s been here before, 18 months ago – in June 2012. It was one of the first times she had left Burma. Today she’s with us to express to us that same desire for freedom and democracy for her country.
France is strongly committed to the possibility of the democracy process under way in Burma achieving its goal, namely free elections in November 2015 and the revisions of the constitution that will enable Burmese people to make their sovereign choice.
We’re aware of the difficulties existing today, the obstacles, and France stands alongside the Burmese people with a view to the reforms promised being implemented as soon as possible.
We’ve lifted the European sanctions in recent years. We’ve ensured that Burma can be incorporated into the economic and trading process. We’re taking action with our European partners, but we’re very vigilant and we’re even worried whenever a barrier, an obstacle is placed on the road to democracy.
That’s why I wanted to give Ms Aung San Suu Kyi my full support in her struggle – it’s not only hers, by the way, it’s that of the whole Burmese people – to achieve full democracy.
Let me take this opportunity to express the French people’s full admiration for Ms Aung San Suu Kyi and our joy to be hosting her again today. She knows she can count on France’s support at all times./.
