Military operation targets armed terrorists in Burkina Faso
Sahel – Operation Barkhane: terrorists neutralized at border between Benin and Burkina Faso – Communiqué issued by the Ministry for the Armed Forces
Paris, 12 February 2022
On 8 and 9 February 2022, coordinated attacks led by an armed terrorist group in Benin, in the area of W Transboundary Park managed by Burkina Faso, Benin and Niger, targeted a patrol of rangers, then members of Benin’s armed forces providing back-up.
Following these attacks, the Barkhane force, alerted by its Beninese and Burkinabé partners, committed air intelligence capabilities on 10 February 2022 to locate the armed group, which was detected for the first time on Beninese territory, near to where the attack took place.
On the morning of 10 February, after locating and identifying a first column of terrorists travelling on motorbikes, an initial airstrike was carried out by a Reaper drone in agreement and in permanent coordination with the Burkinabe authorities just as the column had entered Burkinabé territory. Ten or so terrorists were neutralized and five motorbikes destroyed.
The deployment of a patrol of Mirage 2000 fighters allowed three further strikes to be carried out which targeted terrorists who were reassembling near to where the first strike occurred. During the operation, over 30 terrorists were neutralized and a pick-up and more than 10 motorbikes destroyed.
A total of 40 terrorists were put out of action./.
