Paris, 12 July 2021

Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian will be in the United States from 13 to 17 July, first in Washington and then in New York.

In Washington he will meet US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. He will reaffirm the historic friendship that unites our two countries and our wish to continue deepening the transatlantic relationship, among other things on global challenges, in keeping with the work undertaken since the beginning of the year and the events of last month, including the G7 and NATO meetings, the EU-US summit, and Mr Blinken’s visit to Paris on 25 June. He will also meet US senators.

In a conversation organized by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, he will discuss deepening transatlantic cooperation on challenges related to the Indo-Pacific. On Bastille Day, he will meet members of the French community at the French Embassy in the United States. Lastly, he will be joined by the US Secretary of State in presiding over the inauguration of a replica of the Statue of Liberty – a symbol of French-American friendship – on loan from the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers.

In New York, the Minister will chair two ministerial-level meetings at the UN Security Council, whose rotating monthly chairmanship has been held by France since 1 July. These meetings will focus on two of our diplomatic priorities: the one on 15 July will be dedicated to the situation in Libya, and the one on 16 July to protecting the humanitarian space. On this occasion, the Minister will meet UN Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss the crises and global challenges that the international community is dealing with.

While in New York, the Minister will also meet representatives of French companies and of the French community. He will also take part in a discussion with representatives of digital companies on the challenges of regulating that sector./.
