Minister visits Russia to take stock of Syria situation

A few weeks after the meeting between Presidents François Hollande and Vladimir Putin, Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister of Defence, went to Moscow, Russia, on Monday 21 December 2015. This visit allowed him and his counterpart, Sergei Shoigu, to take stock of the situation in Syria and the fight against [so-called] Islamic State.
The Minister met defence experts before paying tribute to the Unknown Soldier in Moscow’s Alexandrovsky Garden.
France has been engaged in Iraq since September 2014 and in Syria since September 2015 as part of Operation Chammal, for which 12 French fighters are permanently in the region. Since 18 December 2015 and the arrival of the naval strike group in the Persian Gulf, France has seen its air presence increased with an extra 26 fighter aircraft in the area./.
