The President welcomes the decision by the Syrian opposition’s High Negotiations Committee to attend the peace talks in Geneva. Everything must be done to give a political solution a chance.
The humanitarian measures provided for by UNSCR 2254 must be implemented immediately to allow a genuine political transition in Syria finally to begin./.
Paris, 1 February 2016
The President convened a Select Defence Council meeting devoted to external operations.
Among other things, the Council took stock of the French military operations being conducted to step up the fight against Daesh [so-called ISIL] in both Syria and Iraq.
In this context, the President asked for the air strikes aimed at neutralizing Daesh’s critical capabilities to be continued.
In particular, the Council examined what support to lend Syria’s moderate opposition in the run-up to the peace talks beginning in Geneva.
The President recalled the necessity of halting attacks on the Syrian people and embarking on a political transition in Syria, the only solution for establishing lasting peace in that country and eradicating the terrorist threat from Daesh./.
