Security meeting focuses on French election and Syria
Fight against terrorism – Defence and National Security Council – Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic
Paris, 26 April 2017
The Defence and National Security Council reviewed the attack threats directed against the country and our nationals abroad.
It focused especially on terrorist plots and destabilization efforts that might undermine the smooth progress of the election campaign and voting operations.
The French President congratulated Interior Ministry staff, police, gendarmes and the soldiers in Operation Sentinelle on their mobilization, which enabled security to be guaranteed in the first round of the presidential election. He asked for the greatest vigilance to be maintained in the coming days and for the 7 May ballot.
The Council looked at the development of international crises and the conditions in which our forces engaged in operations abroad are used.
The intelligence services presented to the Council the national evidence enabling the involvement of Syrian regime forces in the chemical attack perpetrated in Khan Sheikhoun to be asserted independently. This evidence also demonstrates that the regime still holds chemical warfare agents, in violation of the commitments it made in 2013 to eliminate them. The evidence will be made public./.
