Stopover in London of the hydrogen vessel "Energy Observer" [fr]

The vessel Energy Observer, powered by hydrogen, made a stopover in London between the 4th and the 13th of October. This stopover was part of a world tour that aims at conducting experiments on new ways to decarbonise ship propulsion, more specifically by using hydrogen. This 6 year odyssey, visiting 50 countries and 101 ports on a “floating laboratory”, has in view to test the onboard technologies, in order to develop the energies of tomorrow.

The boat also has the ambition to raise public awareness around the energy transition and the fight against climate change. Energy Observer was nominated French ambassador of the Sustainable Development Goals and has the support of the President Emmanuel Macron.

The innovative onboard technology of the Energy Observer is the result of major research led by the CEA-LITEN, a research institute based in Grenoble and Chambéry. The Catamaran promotes renewable energies and their implementation in maritime transport. It is the first vessel around the world to produce hydrogen directly onboard, through seawater electrolysis. The boat also relies on three other renewable energy sources – the sun, the wind and hydropower – and on two types of energy storage – li-ion batteries and hydrogen.

This French initiative highlights the importance of renewable energies for modern transports and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. It contributes to helping attain the targets of the Paris Agreement.
