The Industry of the Future

The second phase of the French reindustrialisation plan, “The New Face of Industry in France”, which was first launched in 2013, has just been set in motion, under the name “Industry of the Future”, in an event organised in Nantes on the 18th May 2015 with the presence of the French Minister of the Economy, Finance and Industry, Emmanuel Macron.

Building on the plans devised in 2013, this second phase aims more specifically at the modernisation of ways of production as well as business modes and organisational structures in this new digital world where the boundaries between industry and services are fading away.

The five pillars of the “Industry of the Future”

1. Development of supply of technologies in the areas of additive manufacturing, internet of objects and augmented reality where France can become a European or world leader in the next 3 to 5 years. With a total funding of 730M€, a first call for projects will be announced in September 2015 and a new technology platform will be launched in January 2016.

2. Financial and bespoke support of up to 2000 SMEs in the next two years, including 2.5 b€ of tax benefits and 2.1 b€ of loans.

3. Training of employees to ensure they are competent for the new roles they will have in the “Industry of the Future”, including the launch of multidisciplinary programmes and chairs.

4. Promotion of the “Industry of the Future” through the launch of at least 15 showcases until the end of 2016, the branding of this initiative and the organisation of a large international event in Paris during the summer of 2016.

5. Strengthening of European and international cooperation, in particular as regards guidelines and standards and the involvement of French companies in Horizon 2020, and initiation of a partnership with the German platform “Industry 4.0”.

The nine priority markets

1. New Resources

Aiming at a more sustainable way of production also means finding a more efficient way of optimally using resources as well as finding new ones. New solutions will be found in this area by:
• Transforming the ways of production of the chemical industry
• Developing the use of bioresources
• Deploy industrial facilities able to collect, sort out and recycle new materials

2. Smart Cities

New solutions have to be found for securing the sustainability of cities, where 67% of people will live in 2050, namely by:
• Developing a smart management of water and energy
• Improving the energy performance of building and involving the end users
• Increasing the productivity, quality and sustainability of the construction industry

3. Eco-Mobility

In order to respond to the needs of consumers, solutions have to be devised in a way that mobility of people becomes greener, more accessible and safer.

4. Tomorrow’s Transport

In addition to mobility, engineering and transport design will have to find solutions to create transports that are greener and competitive in international markets.

5. Medicine of the Future

With the aging of population and rise of chronic diseases, the health systems will have to adapt finding solutions to healthcare that will help to create the medicine of the future. For that it will be necessary to:
• Concentrate the investments of public and private sector to accelerate innovation
• Create specific “accelerators” for medical technologies
• Support the entry of new medical biotechnologies and innovative medical devices into market

6. The Data Economy

With the advent of the digital devices, an enormous amount of data has been created, which can potentially lead to the development of new markets. Solutions enabling a better management and exploitation of these data must be developed by:
• Supporting skills in the enabling technologies
• Developing innovative ideas from SMEs and startups
• Supporting sector initiatives
• Implementing an encouraging environment
• Adapting regulations

7. Smart Devices

In order to ensure that robots and smart objects will effectively improve our lives, solutions must be imagined to help users take ownership of these objects. For that, one will need to:
• Support the innovation ecosystem
• Accelerate innovation cycles
• Deploy innovative services
• Promote French excellence in this area

8. Digital Confidence

The widespread use and availability of data will need a trustworthy environment to protect citizens and companies. Solutions to build this trust in the digital world must be created by:
• Developing new technologies
• Supporting SMEs and startups
• Maintaining a technological sovereignty
• Raise awareness of economic stakeholders

9. Smart Food Choices

We will also need to ensure food is safe, healthy and sustainable. For that, new industrial solutions for the agri-sciences sector must be created, opening it up to the digital world and developing new products based on yeasts and proteins, subjects where the French sciences excel.
