Generation Equality Forum [fr]

The Generation Equality Forum is the most important feminist event in the last 25 years. It was initiated by UN Women and is co-chaired by France and Mexico, in partnership with civil society and young people.

Following on from a launch in Mexico in March 2021, the Paris Generation Equality Forum will be held from 30 June to 2 July. It will bring together Heads of State and Government, international organizations, but also representatives of civil society, young people and the private sector.

25 years after the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action

The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action were adopted at the Fourth UN Conference on Women 25 years ago. They constitute the most comprehensive framework to date for achieving women empowerment and gender equality. The Forum will launch the global gender equality acceleration plan. Tangible and ambitious commitments will be made to advance equality over the next five years.

The Forum will be a hybrid event :

  • An opening ceremony will take place in person with President Emmanuel Macron as the key speaker
  • Over three days, 90 events will be conducted on a digital platform with the participation of 500 prominent figures. All stakeholders, including civil society, public authorities, local governments, international organizations, the private sector, philanthropic foundations, the media, academics and young people, will take part because gender equality concerns everyone.

The aim is to establish inter-generational, multi-stakeholder and lasting partnerships that spark additional engagement and actions at a global level on crucial issues for gender equality.

Generation Equality Forum action coalitions, working for real progress in Paris

Six action coalitions will be launched at the Generation Equality Forum in July 2021.

As it happened during the G7 French Presidency, these multi-stakeholder partnerships will rally governments, civil society and the private sector to achieve tangible and measurable results over the next five years focused on the following themes :

  • Gender-based violence
  • Economic justice and rights
  • Bodily autonomy and sexual and reproductive health and rights
  • Feminist action for climate justice
  • Technology and innovation for gender equality
  • Feminist movements and leadership

These themes were identified by UN Women in close collaboration with civil society, France and Mexico.

Nearly 100 action coalition champions were already announced on 19 April 2021. They are tasked with drafting an action plan for their coalition and to monitor the implementation of commitments by 2026. On 8 March 2021, the action coalition champions shared an overview of actions which will officially be launched in Paris. They will be joined at the Forum in Paris by legislative, financial and agenda commitment makers and gender equality advocates.

France is one of the champions of the “Bodily autonomy and sexual and reproductive health and rights” action coalition. It will mobilize all of its partners in the months ahead, to ensure the success of this historic event. French initiatives will also be launched in the areas of health, sport and culture.
The health crisis had a much bigger impact on women and girls. That is why, the consequences of the pandemic on gender equality are fully integrated into the work of the Forum’s action coalitions.

The Generation Equality Forum will also launch a Compact for Women, Peace and Security and Humanitarian Action, two decades on from the historic adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. This Compact will supplement the six action coalitions of the Generation Equality Forum and create synergies.
